Этот концепт сформировался в рамках междисциплинарных исследований карьеры, с опорой на концепции человеческого, социального и культурного капиталов, как один из инструментов понимания новых процессов в сфере труда. Содержание этих процессов определяет, в том числе, растущее разнообразие моделей карьер и необходимость их адаптации к организационным стратегиям. Внимание фокусируется на двух основных направлениях исследования этого концепта: в рамках одного из них он рассматривается как инструмент для управленческих практик в современных организациях; в рамках другого – в перспективе развития теории карьеры. Сделаны выводы о том, что подходы к рассмотрению карьерного капитала основаны на междисциплинарном взаимодействии и понимании многоуровневого контекста карьеры в исследованиях организаций.
